Volunteer Your Seat (and Get Paid For It) Using American Airlines App

If you’re flying American Airlines now it might pay to check in to your flight early—literally.

American Airlines recently updated its app to allow customers to volunteer to be bumped from their flight directly within the app, The Points Guy reports. If your flight is oversold you’ll see the option when you go to check in.

The ability to volunteer to be bumped in-app is something that’s already been available for United and Delta customers, and American customers since May 3rd. However, American is taking things a step further to allow you to not only volunteer to get bumped but also receive compensation for that bumping directly in-app with no need to visit the ticket counter.

When you’re selected as a volunteer you’ll receive compensation in-app as well as be allowed to select your replacement flight.

The idea here is that you can volunteer and be selected to take a later flight before you even get to the airport, saving you the trip through security and the hassle of waiting in line at the gate to see if you’re the chosen one. Yes, you’ll miss out on the opportunity to haggle with a gate agent for more cash, but you’ll also miss out on heading to the airport only to end up spending hours there or having to head home to wait for a flight on another day.

If you have flexible travel plans, then it can potentially make the whole process of volunteering your seat and getting paid for it a much easier proposition.
