How To Spend a Big Fat Weekend in Tucson, Arizona

When I told colleagues and friends I was going to Tucson for vacation, all I got was a lot of polite nods. Why… exactly… Tucson? Well, when you’re seven months pregnant and desperate for some sunshine and warmth in March, your options are somewhat limited. Florida felt boring. I’d spent enough time in California. But Arizona… so… outdoorsy! So… catcus-y?

While my culinary expectations were fairly low (“Not every vacation needs to revolve around food,” I told myself), that attitude was completely unfounded. This trip to Tucson was one of the best (unintentional) gastro-tourism experiences I’ve ever had—from great local wheat bread to bean-to-bar chocolate, vegan pork tacos to overstuffed hot dogs. Apparently UNESCO already knew Tucson was a worthwhile culinary destination, naming the city a Capital of Gastronomy in 2015, the first city in the U.S. to receive the designation. I might’ve been late to the party, but at least I’m glad I made it. Here’s how to spend a Big Fat Weekend in Tucson, Arizona.
